Paused: Moments, Memories &
Moving on from Covid-19

My new book Paused: Moments, Memories & Moving On from Covid-19 will be published in April 2026.It is a book about my perspective of when the whole world paused. As a self-employed coach, living in Newcastle, UK; like many people my work stopped, or in my case it evaporated. As an ex-nurse I wanted to be back nursing on the frontline to help the NHS rather than watching and listening to what was going on through the media. It was inevitable that my darling mum would contract Covid-19 in her care home. I went from being her carer for 22 years to car park visiting through her care home window. When she died on 1st May, 2020, I felt so isolated… thank goodness for mobile phones, WhatsApp, Social media and Zoom. I was able to spend time with people – I missed their physical presence and a hug, such a simple pleasure. Listening to everyone’s experiences I decided to capture this moment in time with letters of appreciation to people in my life.

Paused captures a snapshot of my life. I feel incredibly fortunate, as writing this book gave me the opportunity to learn more about the special people in my life. By sharing my letters with you, I wanted to share their different perspectives. The pandemic impacted the whole world, but when we take the time to understand others, we gain a deeper appreciation of how personal circumstances shape perspectives. In many ways, the pandemic offered us a unique ability to see what truly matters in our lives; our ‘silver linings’ in the spirit of “every cloud has a silver lining”.Six themes emerged from people's perspectives and their silver linings:

Yellow roses
  • Family and relationships – that the people and animals that we share our lives with made such a difference to our experiences during Covid-19

  • Nature is a healer – as the world paused, there was time to be outside and connect with nature. Whether it was being in your garden, walking in the countryside or along a beach, being in nature felt healing

  • Loss and grief – as Queen Elizabeth II said, “Grief is the price we pay for love”. It was difficult to grieve whilst we were socially distanced during Covid-19. We all experienced day to day losses and so many people died

  • Connection despite distance – mobile phones, computer networks, technology becoming a lifeline

  • Professional purpose – everything was interrupted; not being able to work in the same way for many people meant the creation and development of new ways of working

  • Personal transformation – life became quieter and more spacious for most people, which meant stopping, pausing and reflecting on life. Suddenly working at home became an option

I hope you will enjoy reading my experiences and it resonates for you about your memories, experiences and your own silver linings, perhaps things you are continuing to do now?

Read the Foreword by Michael Heppell

There are few small pleasures left in modern life that have not been sped up, digitised, AI’d, or quietly eroded. But one we have held on to is the letter. Not an email. Not a text. A letter. The sort that lands on the doormat with a soft, hopeful thud. The sort that makes you pause before opening it. The sort where you notice the handwriting and a real stamp first. The sort that reminds you, however briefly, that someone has stopped, sat down and thought about you.Prepare yourself for a book full of those moments. Not metaphorical ones. Real ones. Dozens of them. Each chapter is a letter. Each letter an act of attention. And in a world that has become increasingly loud, fast, and distracted, it matters more than ever.I’ve known Fiona Setch for twenty-five years. Long enough to know that this book could only have been written by her. Long enough to know that it would never have been written for effect. And long enough to know that, even when she writes about the hardest things, she does so with care rather than drama and honesty rather than noise. What you are holding is not a memoir and it’s not a collection of essays. It’s something more intimate. By choosing letters, Fiona invites you into a series of private spaces. And yet, paradoxically, they feel shared. As the reader, you’re not eavesdropping. You’re being trusted.Letters allow a different kind of truth. They soften the need to impress. They remove the pressure to perform. They encourage reflection rather than reaction.Running quietly beneath many of these letters is a mother and daughter relationship that doesn’t need signposting or explanation. It simply is. Present in memory, in influence, in tone. It gives the book its emotional centre of gravity without ever demanding attention. You feel it rather than being told about it. I believe that restraint is deliberate and it’s powerful. There is also courage in these pages. Not the loud, chest-beating sort, but the quieter kind. The courage to sit with uncertainty. To admit loneliness. To acknowledge fragility. To write, not from a place of having figured everything out, but from a place of being willing to search. That willingness is what makes these letters resonate. You may recognise yourself in some of them. You may recognise people you love. You may recognise moments you thought you had already processed, only to discover you had merely parked them somewhere convenient.I suspect this book will be read slowly. It invites that. You don’t rush letters. You open them, read them, perhaps re-read them. You put them down. You think. You return. And that feels appropriate. This is a book about pausing. About noticing. About the quiet exchanges that shape us more than the big announcements ever do. It reminds us that even when the world feels overwhelming, connection arrives in small, thoughtful ways.Sometimes it arrives in an envelope. Sometimes it arrives in a book. Today it arrives in both.– Michael Heppell

About Fiona

I'm a passionate Geordie woman, proud to call Newcastle home! I share my life with my husband Koo, our son Jamie, two wonderful cats : Luna and Groot and our dog Millie.I'm naturally curious and I love nothing more than meeting new people and exploring what life has to offer. That curiosity has shaped everything I do in life.I'm a coach, coaching supervisor and author; I genuinely love my work!My career began as a palliative care nurse. Being alongside people at the end of their lives was both humbling and profound. It gave me the gift of perspective and made me ask myself: what do I really want to do with mine? That question led me to retrain in teaching adults and coaching. I have a real passion for helping people make the most of their lives. For me, it's all about helping people slow down long enough to 'stop and smell the roses.'I've been working in Learning and Development and Staff Development since 1993 and have been running my own coaching and training business since 2002. Over thirty years of doing work that matters — and I still get excited about it!What inspires me most? That moment when a client has a lightbulb moment. When something shifts, possibilities open up, and you can almost see them stepping into what is next for them. One of my biggest silver linings from the Covid-19 lockdown was discovering TEAM17 a vibrant online community created by the brilliant Michael Heppell. We meet monthly, share ideas and fuel each other's passion for personal development. One of my career highlights was when I spoke at a DAY17 event in Durham.I hope you enjoy the talk below!

Paused: Memories & Moving on from Covid-19

What Coaching is notCoaching is not therapy or counselling.Therapy and counselling deals with a person’s past and often painful events; with the focus on talking about issues and healing. In coaching, whilst acknowledging the importance of past events and experiences, coaching deals more with a person’s present and the focus is on taking action and on creating a desirable future.Using learning to ride a bike to illustrate the differences:

  • A consultant will help you to buy the right bicycle

  • A therapist will help you address your fears and concerns about learning to ride a bike

  • A coach will run along behind you until you take off and ride the bike on your own and help you plan your new cycle route

As your coach I will help you identify your goals, set targets, devise and implement strategies for dealing with them.

The ripple effect of coachingHave you ever dropped a pebble into a pool of water? You create an immediate ripple effect and that is what coaching will do for you.

The ripple effect

Coaching Testimonials

“With Fiona’s help I was transformed from a sweaty, pale rabbit in the headlights interviewee to someone who could actually give a good answer to the questions and look comfortable and confident in the process. She allows you to practice answering questions in the privacy of her virtual office completely removed geographically and socially from your normal circles of influence, so that you can safely remove the cloaks of British embarrassment and finally learn to sing your own praises.
Every session with Fiona helped me enormously, and I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone with an important interview coming up.”
Peter, locum medical consultant
“Fiona's help was invaluable to me in realising my strengths and how to sell myself at interview. She also made me really think about the best way to approach an interview and analyse Job Specifications and Person Specifications. In the current job market, it is very difficult for graduates to get the jobs they want, and I honestly think that without Fiona's guidance I would not have been able to find a job so quickly or start that job with confidence. The interview preparation that you do with Fiona really helps you to analyse how best to approach the situation and how to overcome any areas where you may feel under-confident or unsure how to answer. I found a job that I love, a job that challenges me and a job that makes me feel valued and I got that job because of the coaching and help Fiona gave me. Thanks Fiona!”
Emily, Graduate entering the world of employment
"Fiona coached me in the run up to my interview for a Paramedic Science course for university. The interview consisted of a group session and an individual interview. Fiona is extremely knowledgeable and has great attention to detail when it comes to interview skills, so she was able to help massively with both of these. As well as helping me practice answering interview questions, she also helped me focus my preparation in the days before the interview. This meant that when the interview came that I could answer any question they gave me and I could get my point across clearly, confidently and concisely. When it comes down to it Fiona can be brutally honest if you need to focus your improvement, but it is always in your best interest to do so. I am very pleased to say that I secured my place on what is a very competitive course to get onto, and I feel that without Fiona’s help this would not be the case."
Brian
"I worked with Fiona for six months and during this time I found the experience of being coached to be immensely positive. I was recently promoted and working with Fiona has boosted my confidence and performance in my new role. She has supported me and empowered me to tackle difficult issues, giving me the right balance of support and challenge. I have been able to move into my role as a leader and had space to reflect on my own skills and personal style. Fiona has provided me with personalised, helpful resources and tools to assist me in a variety of tricky situations. My confidence has grown throughout our six-month coaching journey, and I would absolutely recommend Fiona as a coach."
Louise
“Working with Fiona over a number of years has quite literally changed the trajectory of my life. When I first met Fiona, I was in a senior role but internally I felt misaligned, depleted, and increasingly like a square peg forcing myself into a round hole. Through my coaching with Fiona, I was able to establish some clarity and rediscover who I actually am. Fiona created the space for me to untangle the noise, listen to the quieter internal voice I had been ignoring, and articulate my core values with real precision. I stopped ruminating on the feelings of failure, as well as questioning whether something was “wrong with me” and started recognising that I was simply operating in an environment that no longer matched my wiring. That shift gave me the courage to make critical decisions. Through Fiona's questions, she holds up a mirror and helps you see yourself clearly. Two years on, I am running a portfolio career and helping others thrive. Coaching with Fiona will help you find your path. And more importantly, your peace."
Sarah
"I was extremely fortunate to meet Fiona Setch and to have coaching sessions with her over a period of some months. At that time, I was overworked, burnt out and gaining little recognition or satisfaction as a Consultant surgeon in the NHS.
I clearly remember the 22 September that year. Fiona had arranged a personalised one to one day coaching session for me and by the time I was returning home to London, I was centred, motivated and on the road to a better life/work balance. Over the subsequent 2 months Fiona continued to support me with telephone coaching as I made some major decisions that transformed my life. Her compassion, experience and maturity were invaluable to me throughout this time. Perhaps most significant of all was her ability to reflect some hard truths back to me and to quietly remind me of those truths so that I was eventually able to make the difficult choices that changed my situation around. These included a decision to take 4 months out from my job to address escalating serious health problems and to deal with a dysfunctional personal relationship. Now 18 months later I am healthier than I have been since I was in my 20’s (30 years ago). My life is rich, and I have time to enjoy my family life and to invest 3 mornings a week in a lifelong passion (equestrian sports). My job plan has been changed to allow me to play to my strengths and I now get great satisfaction from my clinical sessions. I have also had the time and energy to focus more on research and have started to publish and present again at an International level for the first time in 20 years. Although my sessions were initially reduced when I returned to work after 4 months, I have since taken on 2 extra sessions and my salary is now higher than 2 years ago when I was working much longer hours. It would not have been possible for me to make these changes without Fiona’s coaching. Although most of the changes were made over a year ago, my life now continues to evolve. It is good to know that Fiona’s services are available to me if I need her professional input at times of particular difficulty in the future.
Beverley, consultant surgeon

Coaching Supervision

Paused: Memories & Moving on from Covid-19

Coaching supervision is an opportunity to have some regular time and a thinking space to explore issues in your coaching practice. I know this because I have been receiving my own coaching supervision since 1999 and it has both challenged and enhanced my coaching business! As an experienced coach who has been involved in coaching since 1999 and an advanced practioner in coaching supervision who has been involved in supervision since 1990 when I started my interest in supervision during my first career as a nurse. I am passionate about providing coaching supervision
My coaching supervision model is a holistic, person centred, creative space. As most of my coaching supervision is in the virtual platform Zoom, I am creating a metaphorical space, a garden bench where we can sit side by side and you can have thinking space for your supervision.
My intention is that you have time and space to stop, pause and smell the roses in your coaching practice.

Thinking of your coaching work

There are so many areas that you could bring to your coaching supervision.Proctor's Model* highlights three areas within practice: Normative, Restorative and Formative.* Brigid Proctor, 1990Coaching supervision will usually incorporate all three areas. My garden bench space to stop and smell the roses in your life provides a foundation for restorative wellbeing and experiential learning which can be transformational for you.

Proctors Model of Supervision

Proctor's Model of Supervision

  • Are there any burning issues I need to discuss?

  • When has something not gone as I thought it would… what else has been involved that could have affected the situation? What did I learn? Is there anything that I would have done differently?

  • What has been going well in my coaching?

  • Are there any themes emerging in my coaching to review?

  • Any organisational issues that I would like to talk about?

  • What support or challenge might I need?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, contact me to find out more about my coaching supervision.

Coaching Supervision Testimonials

"Working with my supervisor over the past 15 months has given me invaluable space to pause, reflect, and truly think. Their calm and considered approach has created a supportive environment where I’ve been able to step back from the day-to-day busyness and explore my thought processes more deeply. Having that protected headspace has not only helped me understand how I work, but also why I work the way I do. Through our conversations, I’ve been encouraged to articulate ideas I might otherwise leave unspoken, helping me bring clarity and focus to each month. Fiona's thoughtful questions and steady guidance have enabled me to shape my thinking, refine my approach, and feel more purposeful in my work. It’s been a genuinely enriching experience that has strengthened both my clarity and my sense of direction."
Angie
“Thank you again for our session. As always, the time and space to think about my coaching during our supervision sessions is what I find the most useful! Lots of ideas that we discussed about active reflection and journalling, I especially enjoyed the in-time journalling that I do during our supervision sessions; it helps me clarify my thinking and underline my learning. We discussed and agreed it’s more about listening and bringing hope and benefit, which all fit with my thoughts and values. I find that I also like having ideas and suggestions offered to me; I value your pragmatism and eclectic approach because I can take this away and reflect more and ultimately, I still have to decide what it is I’m going to do. I find the sessions always stretching and supportive, and as I’m writing this, I’m also recognising that I get value from the challenge of putting pace into things and avoiding procrastination, which can lead to self-doubt about whether I’m doing enough or sufficiently competent in helping my coachees. There is always room for improvement but overall, I’m beginning to understand that my coaching practice is meeting requirements and coachees provide me with good feedback. So, I need to keep reminding myself of this evidence, as I also suggest my coachees do – to reflect on whatever evidence they have to draw on and inform their confidence.”
